The immobiliser that came with the car does not stop this

Relay theft uses two small boxes. One stands at your front door and picks up the signal your fob quietly gives off; the other stands by the car and repeats it. The factory immobiliser sees a valid key — so it does what it was designed to do, and lets the car start.

How it actually works

A factory system was never built to stop a relayed key

The onboard immobiliser stops a screwdriver in the ignition. It does not stop a perfectly valid key signal. Once the relay kit has copied the conversation between your fob and the car, the doors unlock, the start button works, and the alarm stays silent — because, as far as the car is concerned, nothing is wrong.

That is why a second, hidden immobiliser is the thing that changes the outcome. It asks for something that is not on the key — a sequence on buttons the car already has — so a relayed fob still gets a car that cranks and never fires.

What actually stops it

A hidden immobiliser the factory never fitted

Until your disarm sequence is entered, the engine will crank but never fire. A relayed key, a clone, or a blank written through the OBD port gets exactly nowhere — even after the factory system has already said yes.

Questions

Straight answers

Doesn't my car already have an immobiliser from the factory?

Yes — and it is the first thing a relay attack defeats. The factory system is designed to stop the car starting without its own key. A relay kit presents that key, so the onboard immobiliser sees a legitimate start and stands down. What it cannot do is ask for a second step that is not on the fob, which is the whole point of a Ghost or a Phantom.

Do you cover Heath and Reach, Stanbridge and Billington?

Yes — Heath and Reach, Stanbridge, Billington, Linslade and the rest of the LU7 villages are standard territory. We come to your driveway, including evenings once you are home from work. No call-out charge.
